mossify
Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 1, 2026
The short version. Mossify is a small hobby game about growing moss across a map. We keep the data needed to save your progress and run the game, and that is basically it.
Mossify itself does not use cookies. We do not use advertising or analytics trackers. We do not sell, rent, or share your information for marketing. You never have to give us your real name, email, or phone number just to play.
This policy explains, in plain language, what information Mossify ("we", "us", "the game", "the site") collects, why, where it is kept, and the choices you have. By using Mossify you agree to what is described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the game.
Who runs Mossify
Mossify is an independent, hobby project operated by Adam. You can reach us any time through the Contact the Developer form inside the game. For any privacy question or request, that is the place to start.
Information we collect
1. Your Mossify account (a login code). When you make an account, you use a login code (the one you received), not a real email address and password. Behind the scenes that code is turned into an internal, made-up address (for example YOURCODE@mossify.local) so the login system has something to work with. We do not ask for or store your real name, real email, or a real password to create or use an account. Keep your code somewhere safe, because it is the only key to your saved map.
2. Your game progress. So your map is there when you come back, we store the things you do in the game, tied to your login code. This includes which US states and countries you have marked as visited and the dates, any notes you type into a journal, which puzzle pieces you have collected, your best scores and times, and other game state (such as whether the moss has been "stolen" in the puzzle storyline). This is saved in our database so you can pick up where you left off on any device.
3. Leaderboards. If you place on a game leaderboard and choose to submit a score, you are asked for three initials. Those initials and your score or time are shown on the leaderboard to other players. Pick initials you are comfortable showing publicly. You are never required to submit a score.
4. Your Mossify Network profile (optional). If you join the Mossify Network, you choose a public nickname, your state, and, if you like, the closest city from a list. Other signed-in players can then see your pin on the globe and a small card with your nickname, closest city and state, the date you joined, your best game scores, and your player picture if one has been made for you. Nothing else from your account is shown to other players: not your journal, your visited states, your puzzle progress, or your login code.
5. Messages you send us. If you use the Contact the Developer form, we store your message and, if you choose to include one, the email address you type in so we can reply. Leaving the email blank is fine; it is recorded as "not provided".
6. Information collected automatically. Like essentially every website, our hosting and database providers, and the outside services the page loads (listed below), automatically receive standard technical information when your browser connects, such as your IP address, browser type, and the time of the request. We do not use this to build a profile of you or to track you across other sites. It is a normal part of how any site on the internet works.
Cookies and similar technologies
Mossify itself does not use cookies. To make the game work, we do use a small amount of your browser's built-in storage (localStorage, sessionStorage, and the cache), for things like remembering that you are signed in, your game settings, a "welcome back" counter, a one-time "add to home screen" hint on iPhones, and cached copies of your moss artwork so the map loads quickly. All of this is strictly necessary or functional, meaning it exists only to provide the game you asked for. Because we do not use cookies or any tracking, advertising, or analytics storage, there is no cookie consent banner to click through.
The one exception is outside our control: if you choose to play a video in Mosstube or turn on the radio, those players come from YouTube and Mixcloud and may set their own cookies or similar storage under their own privacy policies. Videos use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, and neither player loads unless you open it.
How we use your information
We use the information above only to run the game: to save and load your map and progress, keep you signed in, show leaderboards, respond to messages you send us, and keep the game working and reasonably secure. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
Who we share it with
We keep things simple and use a small number of trusted service providers to actually run the game. They process data on our behalf, not for their own marketing:
- Vercel hosts and serves the website to your browser.
- GitHub stores the project's source code.
- Supabase provides the database and login system that store your account and progress.
The page also loads a few things straight from other services. When it does, they receive your IP address and basic browser information, and each handles that under its own privacy policy:
- Google Fonts (Google) supplies the site's typefaces, on every visit.
- jsDelivr and cdnjs (Cloudflare) supply the open-source code libraries the game runs on, on every visit.
- YouTube (Google) supplies video thumbnails when you open Mosstube, and the video player when you choose a video.
- Mixcloud supplies the radio stream, only when you open the radio.
These providers are based in, or process data in, the United States, so your information may be stored and handled there. We may also disclose information if we are legally required to (for example, a valid legal request), or if needed to protect the safety and rights of players or the game. Other than that, we do not share your information with third parties.
What we do not do
- No cookies of our own.
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No analytics or tracking tools (no Google Analytics, no pixels, no fingerprinting).
- No selling, renting, or trading your information.
- No following you around other websites.
Your choices and rights
You are in control of your data:
- Clear local data: clearing your browser's site data for Mossify removes the on-device items (settings, counters, cached art, and your signed-in session).
- Access or delete your account data: because accounts are tied to a code rather than an email, we cannot automatically identify you, so send us your login code through the Contact the Developer form and ask us to export or delete your saved data, and we will take care of it.
- Stop using the game: you can simply stop playing at any time.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the EU and UK GDPR (access, correction, deletion, and more) or the California CCPA/CPRA (including the right to know and to delete, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights). Since we do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, there is nothing to opt out of on that front. To exercise any right, contact us and we will help.
Children's privacy
Mossify is meant to be family friendly, but it is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country, such as 16 in parts of the EU). We do not require a real name or email to play. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information we should not have, contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention and security
We keep your account and progress for as long as your account is active or as needed to run the game, and we delete it when you ask us to. Access rules in our database let each account read only its own saved map and journal, contact messages can be read only by the developer, and other players see only the Network profile details described above. We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no method of storage or transmission over the internet is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as the game changes. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top. If we ever start doing something materially different with your data (for example, adding analytics or advertising), we will make that clear and, where required, ask for your consent first.
